I am looking at a 2001 JD 4400 with gear transmission, FEL & BH. It has less than 200 hours.

I have been reading about bad experiences with 4400's and I am unsure if I want one now.

Does anyone know if the troubles with 4400's are with the HST's only or gear tractors too?

Not speaking as an owner, but I've heard of only two problems with the 4400.

First, on the HST transmission some people complain about that the HST pedal is too stiff to operate for long periods of time.

Secondly, the front axle steering geometry was such that the tractor would tear up turf excessively during turns when finish mowing. For most or all other purposes it was fine. JD had a program where they would replace the front axles on tractors that were used to mow. If this is an issue you'll want to make sure you have the updated front axle. ....

Thanks for the information. I will not be mowing. The problems I read about included all kinds of hydraulic issues.

I still have a few days to decide. I hope to hear more. ....

There were no serious hyd problems with the 4400 gear. They did have a pip on the valve for the rock shaft.

There is a bushing in the trans that bothers on some and not others and JD changed mine because of a rattle I did not like.

You've already visited the axle issue. I'll add that it is not a mechanical concern. The old style is as solid as a rock but it is tuff on a lawn doing tight turns. My dealer did not have any problems changing mine I only had to tell him it scuffed my lawn.

The 4400 gear is a solid unit. ....
